The New London Barn Playhouse is seeking a Director for this summer's outdoor production of The Comedy of Errors, performed by our Junior Intern Company (an audition-based company of approximately 30 local teenagers). The Director for this company should be an early-career director with a passion for working with young artists and experience abridging and teaching Shakespeare to teenagers.

If interested and applicable, there is the potential to stay for up to 4 additional weeks to teach weekly summer camps for ages 6-11. Each week of camps would come with additional salary.

Job duties include:
-Perform the duties typical of a stage director including but not limited to holding auditions, casting, blocking, giving notes, organizing rehearsal needs
-Work with the Education Director on abridging and adapting the full text to a 60-70 minute version.
-Creatively interpret a script and bring a production to life within a short period of time for a site-specific outdoor production
-Communicate and meet frequently with designers and stage manager
-Lead specialized workshops if interested
-Attend and communicate via daily production meetings
-Assist on other aspects of production/company as needed
-Be a role model for the company, in teaching them professional theatre etiquette, both for rehearsals and performances

-Experience directing teenagers or other youth theater education
-Experience directing or teaching Shakespeare
-Passion for creating art while educating young people
-Ability to work in a rigorous, fast-paced environment
-Innovative thinking skills and ideas, creative problem solving
-Passion for collaboration
-Ability to motivate, facilitate and direct teenagers and create a culture of respect and participation
-Driven self-starter and multi-tasker
-A sense of humor and fun

COVID plan: For the Barns 2021 season, all shows will be produced outdoors, with the audience sitting in socially distanced pods. Rehearsals/classes will be held outdoors as much as possible, with masks worn and everyone socially distanced; when weather sends us indoors, we will increase the distance between everyone and limit the number of people in a given room. The removal of masks will only be permitted in specific circumstances with increased distance and in limited numbers. Staff will be tested regularly, and all students will get a temperature check and answer health screening questions upon arrival each day.
