The Phoenix Theatre Company, a LOA LORT D Theatre and Arizonas largest professional regional theatre, seeks a year-round Properties Master- Salary + Benefits staff position.

Located in the heart of the Central Arts District close to downtown, our beautiful 14-acre campus includes three theaters, a restaurant and bar, rehearsal halls, administrative offices, and costume, scenic, prop, lighting and paint shops, all on one site.

We produce a wide range of theatre, from full-scale musicals to comedies, dramas and original new work. Some of the exciting shows this season include: Rocky Horror Picture Show, Camelot, Million Dollar Quartet Christmas, Hello Girls and Steel Magnolias.

The Phoenix Theatre Company produces shows in both a 380 seat proscenium space and a 250 seat black box space, for a jam packed versatile season. We are currently operating on our newly conceived outdoor stage and plan to return to indoor programming in May if safety allows.

The Phoenix Theatre Company developed and operates within a robust Covid safety system. This system achieved AEA + SDC approval and the theatre was the 20th institution to be granted AEA contracts. Safety systems include: weekly testing free of charge at the theatre, strict mask adherence, social distancing in shops, virtual meetings, detailed daily cleaning of spaces, PPE supplies provided, and a Covid compliance officer present monitoring, advising and enforcing safety rules and regulations.

Job Function

The Properties Master works closely with the scenic designer, director and all production staff to help create the artistic vision for the property needs of each production at The Phoenix Theatre Company. The Properties Master is responsible for purchasing, acquiring, manufacturing, and overseeing any props needed for each production and maintaining them throughout a show run while managing the properties artisan and apprentices. The Properties Master also works to manage the physical appearance of the scenery with set dressing requirements. The Properties Master works with the stage managers to acquire rehearsal props as needed. The Properties Master is on staff during pre-production to help develop the stylistic concept of the physical production.


Essential Duties + Responsibilities

Designs/pulls/shops/creates the necessary properties design elements to convey the directors artistic vision for each production
Attends all meetings and rehearsals including - Conceptual Design meetings, Production meetings, Designer Run-Thru rehearsals, Technical rehearsals, Dress rehearsals, note sessions, and Preview performances.
Communicates and coordinates with Director, Production Stage Manager, and Scenic Designer to ensure that all design requirements are completed within the Production schedules deadlines.
Ensures that all prop items are completed on time
Acquires all materials needed to fulfill the shows needs and the design teams vision; this includes but is not limited to: shopping for materials (lumber, fabrics, paints, etc.), borrowing or renting pieces from other theatres or retailers.
Maintains props shop supplies and manages props rentals
Maintains all prop storage areas including hand prop storage, furniture storage, and items stored in the warehouse
May need to build furniture from scratch: skills shall include welding, carpentry and upholstery.
Creates build schedules for the properties team for all productions at The Phoenix Theatre Company
Sets schedules for properties apprentices and train them in the use of tools and materials
Tracks budgets accordingly.


Minimum Qualifications
Artistic vision, creativity, and understanding of theatre
Knowledge of time periods, styles, and design
Ability to work in numerous different mediums i.e. sewing, building, welding, carpentry, electrical wiring, crafts, etc.
Minimum of two years professional experience or other relevant training

Physical / Mental Demands + Working Conditions
Weekends and evenings maybe required due to the nature of the theatres performance schedule.
General theatre, scene shop and prop shop work environment
Heavy lifting to move furniture and props
Heights up to 25 feet
