Position Summary
The Craft person is responsible for the construction, fitting and alteration of costume craft items, including but not limited to: armor, puppets, masks, millinery, footwear, belts, bags, jewelry and dye work. They should be familiar with as many different techniques and materials as necessary to complete the tasks mentioned and /or be able to research new techniques/products as needed.
Essential Functions
• Development and fitting of craft pieces according to designer specification
• Cuts or supervises cutting, construction, finish work, and alterations on assigned craft items
• timely delivery of craft pieces for dress rehearsals
• Creates patterns to cut out all materials needed for each assigned project
• Fits all assigned projects to actor
• Helps Determines yardage for fabric and trims for the assigned projects
• Researches the period, style, techniques and materials necessary to complete the costume within the costume designer’s guidelines
• Maintains the integrity of the costume design
• Ability to work with performers and staff in a positive and professional manner while on campus at all times.
• Cleans and maintains all spaces daily.
• Maintain flexible schedule for work calls especially during tech weeks
• Adhere to and promote all Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and maintain a safe work environment.
• Contributes to the overall success of the Production Department by preforming any additional duties and responsibilities assigned
Qualifications
• Demonstrated knowledge of Dye techniques and procedures using Union, Fiber Reactive, and other dyes including ageing/distressing
• Demonstrated knowledge in Costume Craft Fabrication.
• Demonstrated knowledge in Millinery techniques.
• Demonstrated knowledge of/and experience in a variety of costume construction techniques including tailoring, period construction techniques, and alterations.
• Understanding of period shape and how to adapt it to theatrical crafts
• Demonstrated knowledge in shoe/leather work.
• Demonstrated knowledge in theatrical Quick Rigging and sewing techniques
• Good working knowledge of costume history
• Good working knowledge with as many different techniques and materials as necessary to complete the tasks mentioned and /or be able to research and bring to the design new products as needed.
Skills / Abilities
• Ability to operate shop equipment including industrial and domestic sewing machines, multi needle and leather sewing machines, steam irons, and cutting tools
• Proven skills in cutting, costume craft construction, alterations, and fittings
• Ability to collaborate with the costume team to efficiently complete assigned projects.
• Excellent organizational skills
• Excellent time management skills
• Excellent communication skills
• Ability to lift 20 lbs
• Ability to work outside in a desert climate. (Our build facilities are located indoors)
• Pattern making and/or draping skills a plus
• Puppetry skills are a huge plus!
Housing is Provided.
Production Dates: March 15th – July 31st
Salary / Rate: $15.00 / hour plus overtime
2021 Production shows include Disney’s The Beauty and the Beast, Annie, The Count of Monte Cristo, School of Rock, Million Dollar Quartet and A Christmas Story.
Extensive COVID-19 plan already active throughout theatre, including mandatory masks, augmented builds, restricted fittings.
