Full Time Technical Designer- Theatrical Scene Shop
The technical designer is the linchpin of the design/fabrication process. Working from the drawings of some of the industry’s leading artistic lights, they are responsible for planning and executing safe, cost-effective, and visually stunning solutions to some of the thorniest artistic challenges in the industry.
We seek a full-time technical designer for immediate hire. This position is responsible for creating shop-floor working drawings from pre-existing design concepts. Working in concert with the project manager, they determine construction methods, create material orders, build CAD models and layout drawings, and communicate technical intent to the fabrication team.
What we’re looking for:
-In depth knowledge of standard theatrical construction techniques and associated materials - wood, aluminum, and steel. Familiarity with electrics, pneumatics, upholstery, plastic fabrication, sheet metal, sculpting and paint processes a plus.
-Comfort and facility with theatrical rigging and stage mechanics
-Strong verbal and written communication skills
-Ability to work independently under tight deadlines
-Ability to maintain a positive attitude while working on high profile, high expectation and time sensitive projects
-BA in Technical Theater or related degree, or 4+ years industry experience
- Autodesk Inventor: Inventor is the company standard parametric modeling package. Proficiency is preferred, although training is available for the right candidate
-Autodesk AutoCAD: 2+ years experience in a professional/educational setting
-Ability to design for CNC router/waterjet/tubing laser is a plus
-Extensive experience in SolidWorks, Rhino, AlphaCAM or Cabinetvision will be considered in lieu of Inventor

The new shop will greatly improve our capacity, and allow us to tackle larger and more complex projects. We’re looking forward to expanding our team to meet the challenge. Since opening in 2002, we have built up a diverse selection of clients and a reputation for producing some of the highest caliber work in NY theater. Daedalus is predominantly focused on creating complex sets and props for Broadway, Off-Broadway, and (inter)national tours, as well as innovative and exciting projects in retail, TV, and hospitality.
