ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND

Opera Saratoga, formerly Lake George Opera, began with a production of Die Fledermaus at the Diamond Point Theatre on July 5, 1962, playing to an audience of 230. The Company now calls Saratoga Springs, New York home and performs for more than 25,000 people annually during the Summer Festival, as well as through community engagement programs year-round. The 2020 Summer Festival under the leadership of Artistic and General Director Lawrence Edelson, will feature 3 different productions: The Pirates of Penzance, Sky on Swings, Madama Butterfly; as well as a wide variety of concerts at diverse venues unique to the region.

THE POSITION

The Technical Director is contracted as a full-time resident position for a period leading into, during, and after the Summer Festival. For the 2020 Season, he/she will be required to be in residence from May 27th to July 8th. Outside of the resident period, he/she completes task as needed on a limited basis remotely.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

PRE PRODUCTION
Communicate with the Production Manager (PM), Designers, and production shops for each production to determine feasibility and resources needed for each production

Under the guidance of the PM, work with the Assistant Technical Director (ATD) to prepare technical drawings and source any materials and/or equipment needs for the season

PRODUCTION - IN RESIDENCE IN SARATOGA SPRINGS May 27th to July 8th

Prepare budget estimates for scenic
elements of on-site builds with the
ATD and PM
Work with the PM and ATD to keep all scenic elements within budget
Create and supervise construction drawings with the ATD
Coordinate, in partnership with PM and ATD the setup of scene shop facilities in theater
Secure and oversee purchases of all needed materials
Develop the build schedule with the ATD for on-site builds in coordination with other
departments, and adjust the build schedule as production needs change
Supervise and participate in the build of scenic elements
Supervise and participate in the installation of scenery built off-site
Coordinate load-in and changeover schedules with the PM and ATD
Supervise ATD, scenic crew and Carpenter Interns
Work with other department heads to make sure all crew needs are met
Attend all production meetings, technical rehearsals, and other rehearsals as needed
Present weekly budget updates to the Production Manager
Maintain all scenic elements during production period
Ensure a safe, clean, and organized workspace, including all storage areas
Other duties as assigned by the PM

POST PRODUCTION:
Supervise the load-out of all three productions and disposal or storage of each
Supervise the restoration of all theater spaces and the return of all Opera Saratoga stock

QUALIFICATIONS AND DESIRED SKILLS

The Technical Director will bring a strong appreciation of Opera Saratogas mission and a desire to positively both impact the organizations long-term success and enhance the quality of productions presented by the company. He/she must have the following skills and experience:

2+ years experience as a Technical Director, or 3+ years experience as an Assistant Technical
Director working in professional opera and/or theater
Computer proficient (MS word, Excel, Vectorworks, or AutoCad, and internet file sharing)
Capacity to solve problems and engage in creative thinking to overcome challenges
Well-developed communication skills
Maturity and understanding of the artistic process and excellent interpersonal, teamwork, and
diplomacy skills
Ability to prioritize, multi-task and work quickly and accurately with attention to detail
Comfortable working at heights from Genie lifts, ladders and scaffolding.
Ability to lift at least 50 lbs.
Drivers License required

COMPENSATION, TRAVEL AND HOUSING

Competitive compensation based on experience. Travel stipend, and housing during the Summer Residency period is provided.
