The Commonweal Theatre Company, a professional repertory theatre in rural Minnesota, offers exciting, demanding and rewarding technical apprenticeships intended to help young theatre practitioners transition into the professional world.
For approximately eleven months, technical apprentices work alongside the companys professional stage managers and production manager while serving on various administrative teams, i.e. Marketing, Development and Production. Because of the rare organization model of the Commonweal, apprentices experience the full scope of running a theatre company, which helps prepare them for a life in the theatre.
The Commonweal Theatres 31st Season runs from March through December with up to 6 shows per week in a rotating repertory schedule. The 2019 season includes: Holmes and Watson, Boeing Boeing, Peter + the Starcatch, On the Verge, and Sanders Family Christmas.
As a member of the apprentice company, you and your fellow apprentices will produce a capstone project to be performed in March 2020.
Apprentices receive a weekly stipend of $75 and housing in Commonweals purpose-built Artists Residence. Fully furnished and located only three blocks from the theater, housing in the Residence includes all utilities, laundry facilities, internet and cable TV.
Responsibilities:
Serve as an Assistant Stage Manager and/or Designer for our mainstage season productions.
Act as Stage Manager for the 2020 Apprentice Project (chosen by the Apprentice Company)
Call and run performances of assigned shows (includes operating computerized sound and lighting systems)
Maintain a safe, smooth running environment
Participate in all changeovers while in the repertory season
Serve on the production team under the supervision of the Production Manager

Requirements:
Bachelors degree in theatre or commensurate experience with demonstrated interest in stage management
Computer savvy (must know Microsoft Office and Google Systems)
The ability to work efficiently and gracefully under pressure
Ability to work graciously and generously as part of a team
Valid Drivers License
Able to lift 50 pounds
Able to safely work with 20 foot extension ladder and Genie lift
Basic knowledge of sound and lighting systems
