Circus Smirkus Big Top Tour staff experience firsthand the excitement and adventures of being part of a traditional touring youth circus. Teamwork, a good attitude, and the willingness to get things done are a must! We are seeking a sound engineer to join us as part of our circus family this summer from June to August!

The sound engineer will plan and execute all sound needs. Assist in the execution of all lighting and special effect needs for the production. Assist in the safe and efficient set-up and tear-down procedures for the technical department including lighting and sound.


1. Mix live band and run recorded audio cues during performances and rehearsals as specified by Sound Designer.
2. Work with Production Manager and Artistic Director to update sound cues as needed on tour, while maintaining the intent of the sound design.
3. Participate in band rehearsals as requested by Music Director or Bandleader.
4. Participate in sound checks each site and as needed.
5. Run soundboard during all performances unless excused by the Production Manager.
6. Responsible for the safe and efficient set-up and take-down of the sound system at each location.
7. Assist in the set-up and take-down of all other technical equipment including lighting and effects.
8. Train Technical Director as backup sound board op.
9. Plan and execute, with the Technical Director, the safe and efficient loading and unloading of technical equipment for travel.
10. Responsible for the maintenance and repair of all sound equipment. Assist Lighting Technician with all electrical needs.
11. Keep an accurate inventory of sound equipment.
12. Return rented sound equipment in good condition at end of tour.
13. Assist in the set-up and tear down of back lot at the discretion of the Tour General Manager. Duties may include but are not limited to: Setting and leveling bunkhouses, running hoses and electrical cords, setting up dishwashing station, setting up picnic tables and dining tent.
14. Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.
15. Ability to work at heights.
16. Drive company vehicle.
17. Other jobs as needed.


Internal: Work is normally conducted in an office environment.

External: Work requires travel throughout Vermont and surrounding states in preparation for and while on the summer tour.


Work involves standing, walking, bending, kneeling, reaching, stooping, and other physical activities consistent with setting up heavy equipment. Work may include lifting, carrying or moving objects and equipment weighing over 50 pounds.

Supervision is received from the Technical Director and Production Manager. The additional direction is received from the Sound Designer.

This is an approx. three-month seasonal position from June-August 2019.
