Job Description

Assistant Professor: Scene/Light Design + TD

Truman State Universitys Department of Theatre seeks a candidate with expertise in lighting and scenic design, technical direction, and facility with sound and projection design and technology. The successful candidate will be committed to teaching excellence and to maintaining an active undergraduate program. This tenure-track position will commence August 12, 2019.


- Teach Stagecraft, Stage Lighting, Scene Design, and either Freshman Theatre Seminar or Senior Theatre Seminar
- Serve as technical director and scene shop supervisor for mainstage productions
- Design + construct scenery and lighting for mainstage productions (or supervise student designers)
- Design sound for mainstage productions (or supervise student sound designers)
- Supervise student interns, scholarship workers, lab show technicians, and volunteers in the scene shop
- Serving as academic advisor for students
- Other duties as assigned (committee service, rotate in as department chair, advise Alpha Psi Omega, coordinate participation in KCACTF, teach Intro to Theatre, maintain website, direct, etc.)


- MFA in Scene and/or Light Design by August 12, 2019
- Demonstrated excellence in design and construction

- Significant professional design, construction, and/or technical direction experience
- Strong written and oral communication skills

SALARY: Salary is commensurate with experience and education. The benefits package includes life, health and disability insurance, retirement contributions, and reimbursed assistance for moving expenses.

THE THEATRE DEPARTMENT: The program offers the degree Bachelor of Arts in Theatre. With four full-time instructors (and one part-time), the department currently enrolls approximately 60 majors. As part of the School of Arts and Letters, along with visual arts and music, the department provides liberal arts experiences for non-theatre majors as well.
