Flat Rock Playhouse (The State Theatre of North Carolina) seeks a Master Electrician to join its 2019 Season Production Staff. Employment period would be April 1 through December 21, 2019.

The ME reports directly to the Head of Lighting + Projections and Production Manager to coordinate, plan, and maintain all of the lighting and video production needs for all productions and events. Additionally, the ME will assist the Head of Lighting + Projections in running the Electrics Department consisting of an electrician and interns, and supervising apprentices and volunteers.

Candidates should exhibit skills in lighting console programming (ETC EOS software); DMX, sACN and other network-based lighting systems; Q-Lab; Vectorworks; Lightwright and other industry standard software and protocols. The ME will be expected to maintain an extensive lighting inventory, including equipment accessories such as scrollers, hazers, LED fixtures, moving lights, and other DMX equipment. Additional expectations include supervising crews, assisting with all company events, and maintaining backstage safety. Organizational skills are a MUST. Knowledge of emerging hardware and video technologies is a plus. The ME must be available to work nights, weekends, and holidays. Additionally, the ME may serve as board operator, spot-light operator, or other run crew as needed.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: supervising the installation of each productions lighting package; programming and running the lighting console for productions and limited engagements/rentals; maintaining inventory and stock; keeping all workspaces organized and tidy; overseeing production crew needs; participating in improvements to all FRP spaces and the Electrics Department; and other duties as assigned by Head of Lighting + Projections and Production Manager.

The ideal candidate will possess:

A degree in technical theatre or the equivalent. A minimum of 3 years experience as an electrician for a regional theatre or equivalent work experience.

Strong organizational skill. Ability to keep track of a large inventory of lighting equipment and practicals, and ability to keep workspaces, booths and offices clean and organized on a daily basis.

A positive attitude, strong leadership skills, and ability to work well under stress are extremely important. Must show a proven ability to maintain organized, up to date, paperwork, and have the ability to multi-task.

Excellent working knowledge of: theatrical lighting design implementation, set and stage electrics, special effects (fog, smoke, haze), maintenance and repair of digital and conventional theatrical lighting equipment.

Knowledge of and operating ability of theatrical lighting consoles (ETC EOS software, ION, GIO, etc. consoles, ETC Express), digital and conventional theatrical lighting equipment, DMX, sACN and other network-based systems, theatrical video and projection technologies

Ability to use Vectorworks, Lightwright 6, Q-Lab, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Calendar, Google Drive and Dropbox.

Must have a valid drivers license and reliable transportation on-site.

Must be able to lift 70 lbs. Must be able to work from heights, i.e. catwalks, grids, genie lifts.

Must be able to climb 250 lbs rated ladder with lighting equipment.

Strong communication skills both verbal and written.

Demonstrated ability to finish work on time and within budget.

A creative problem solver who anticipates problems and communicates strategies and plans in order to proactively solve problems in advance.

Knowledge of theatrical rigging and rigging systems. Basic carpentry skills are a definite plus.

Working knowledge of OSHA, NEC, and NFPA regulations.
