About the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company

The Cincinnati Shakespeare Company (CSC) is a resident ensemble theatre company bringing Shakespeare and the Classics to life for audiences of all ages. Producing year-round, CSC executes up to 10 main stage productions, 6 touring productions, and several additional events per season.

Position Overview
The Resident Costume Designer is essential to the creative core of CSC, collaborating closely with guest designers, resident designers, and the Producing Artistic Director to ensure that CSC executes all of its projects to the highest artistic standard possible. The Resident Costume Designer is responsible for designing the costumes for the majority of CSC productions, and works on all productions as a costume technician.

The Resident Costume Designer has a base schedule of 9am-5:30pm, Monday through Friday. Extended hours and modified workweeks are often necessary due to technical rehearsal schedules, rental appointments, special events, and specific production needs.

This is a full-time, salaried position. The Resident Costume Designer is eligible for benefits through CSC, which include health, dental, and vision insurance as well as 2 weeks of paid vacation, holidays, and sick leave.

The selected candidate will receive a 1-year contract with CSC. A successful resident designer will receive the option to expand this into a permanent position following the 1-year engagement.

Required skills include:
Three years of professional costume design experience or comparable higher-level education/design experience.
Demonstrated artistic and design experience working within a wide range of material budgets.
Demonstrated ability to communicate design ideas and intent (renderings, research, etc.).
Comfortable working on multiple productions simultaneously.
Advanced costume construction and artistry skills.
Able to serve as a pattern maker and draper for the CSC costume shop.
Must be able to lift 30lbs, bend, kneel, and climb small ladders.
Preferred skills include:
Basic experience in costume crafts.
Costume design budgeting experience.

Serve as the Costume Designer for the majority of CSC mainstage and touring productions, with a goal of being assigned up to (7) total productions seasonally.
- Read, research, and analyze the scriptwith consideration for directorial cuts.
- Collaborate with creative team to ensure a cohesive and excellent design product.
- Adhere to production benchmark schedule for design phase executions.
- Design costume, hair, and makeup elements as agreed upon between Designers, Directors, and Producing Artistic Director.
- Source rentals required for design execution.
- Assign build projects, fitting notes, and work notes to costume shop staff members.
- Shop and purchase items required for design execution.
- Attend production meetings, technical rehearsals, design runs, and first rehearsals.
- Attend costume fittings.
- Participate in the build process including pulling, patterning, stitching, and draping as necessary for any costume design execution.
- Participate in all strike calls under the direction of the Costume Shop Manager.
- Assist the general operation, maintenance, and housekeeping of the costume department.
If not designing:
- Present costume design at first rehearsal if shows designer is unable to attend.
- Attend at least (1) dress rehearsals of each production.
- Serve as the liaison for guest designers as needed.

Submit receipts to the Costume Shop Manager weekly.
Avoid overspending through awareness of show and departmental budgets.

Reliable mode of personal transportation.
Adhere to company policies and regulations per the CSC Company Handbook.
Maintain a safe, fair, and ethical working environment.
- Participate in stage cleaning and preparation leading into technical rehearsals and build processes.
- Restore work areas in the shop to a clean and tidy fashion on a regular basis.
Collaborate with the creative staff, Production Manager, and Producing Artistic Director to improve overall aesthetic product and production processes.
- Ensure that all costume designs executed by CSC achieve world-class standards.
- Communicate openly with the Production Manager regarding any design quality concerns.
Other duties as requested by the Costume Shop Manager or Production Manager.
