Full-Time Staff Position

Whittier College, a private, independent, liberal arts college near Los Angeles, California, seeks a qualified, personable, collaborative, and well-motivated individual to fill a full-time, nine-month (renewable), staff position in theatre design and technology for the 2018-2019 academic year. The person selected for this position will serve as the Technical Director and Scene Shop Supervisor for the Department of Theatre and Communication Arts.+nbsp;Additionally, if qualifications permit, the successful candidate could servefor additional compensationas scenic and/or lighting designer for one of the departments three major productions and as instructor for one or two courses during the academic year.

Primary Responsibilities: Serve as the departments staff technical director under the direction of the Theatre Departments Resident Designer and its Department Chair, providing technical direction and supervision for three faculty-directed productions and technical support and supervision for other events in the department, including a small number of student productions and guest artist presentations, etc. Duties include the following: provide overall supervision of scenery and properties construction and stage rigging for department productions; serve as a hands-on scene shop supervisor; serve as lead scenic carpenter and lighting technician as necessary; instruct and supervise a part-time, paid student technical staff (typically 15 to 20 students) and also laboratory students in scenery construction, basic painting, and stage properties; oversee basic lighting and sound technical support for department productions with assistance from other theatre staff and faculty; supervise load-in and strike for each production. Coordinate purchases and rentals for scenery, lighting, and stage properties. Maintain scene shop inventory and equipment; maintain the lighting and sound equipment in the departments Studio Theatre; rigorously maintain a safe working environment and safe working practices as part of providing technical support for the department; supervise student crews as needed during technical and dress rehearsals and performances; serve as the departments chief technical liaison with the staff of the colleges performing arts center; monitor and approve student employees bi-weekly time sheets. The position is considered full-time with weekly hours varying per week, depending on the production schedule, which will include four to six weekend workdays for each major production.

Secondary Responsibilities (if qualified, for additional compensation): Provide scenic and/or lighting designs for one of the three department productions during the 2018-19 academic year, including supervision of scenic painting and lighting technology for each production. Teach one or two courses in theatre design or technology.

Qualifications: Preferred: M.F.A. in theatre design and technology with demonstrated ability to design scenery and/or lighting. Minimum: B.A. or B.F.A. in theatre with an emphasis in design and technology or equivalent experience.

Additional requirements: Must be able to climb ladders and scaffolding, use and supervise the safe use of telescopic personnel lifts, manually lift a minimum of 50 lbs., and work directly and actively with students and other staff members in the scene shop, backstage, and onstage.

Salary: $38,500 is the base salary, plus medical and dental insurance benefits and accrued vacation time. For qualified applicants, with completed MFAs and experience, additional compensation is possible as a guest designer and/or as an adjunct instructor ($4,500 - $15,000).
Length of Assignment: This nine-months-long, renewable position will begin on or about Monday, August 27, 2018, and continue through Friday, May 24, 2019.
