Animax Designs Inc., based in Nashville, Tennessee is currently hiring. Founded in 1989, we specialize in the design + production of electromechanical animatronic creatures/characters for live shows and theme park attractions. Our work ranges from intelligent animatronics, hybrid performance characters, animated costumes, to mechanized and traditional puppets.
This is a full time position with a generous benefit package.
We are looking for a skilled Costume Draper to join our costume team.
Uses the artwork provided by the Costumer Supervisor or Costume Lead to create pieces.
Researches the techniques necessary to complete the costume within the guidelines.
Maintains the integrity of the Intellectual Property through his/her interpretation of the artwork and Animax standards on finished projects.
Fabricates patterns, either by draping or flat patternmaking, for specific pieces.
Marks corrections as needed in fittings/fit-ups.
Corrects patterns or alters pieces as necessary.
Determines yardage for fabric and trims for the piece if not already done by Costume Supervisor or Costume Lead, either by machine or hand, the costumes assigned by the Costume Lead.
Cuts or supervises the cutting of all the fabric for the piece from the pattern.
Supervises a crew by preparing and delegating work to Stitchers.
Supervises documentation of project techniques and directions for Project Bible.
Communicates with other team members concerning problems and possible solutions.
Manages time effectively on each sewing project, including that of assigned Stitchers.
Maintains personal work area, including sewing machinery as necessary to keep work moving effectively.
Attends meeting for relevant projects.
Performs other duties as assigned by Costume Lead (see below).

Strong, demonstrated proficiency in draping and the "sculptural" using of fabric.
Strong, demonstrated proficiency in flat patternmaking
Experience working with foam, padding, exaggerated body shapes and/or soft sculpture preferred.
Good working knowledge of fabric types and uses.
Knowledge of and experience in a variety of costume construction techniques.
Knowledge of and experience in both men's and ladies' tailoring techniques preferred.
Crew management skills including but not limited to: time management, work flow, and interpersonal communication.
Demonstrated experience in a variety of hand sewing techniques.
Demonstrated experience in a variety of machine sewing techniques.
Ability to operate with skill a variety of sewing machines including but not limited to: single needle industrial; industrial zig-zag; overlock, merrow or serger; domestic straight and zig-zag machines.
Ability to operate domestic and industrial steam irons.
Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time.
Ability to manage time effectively.
Ability to be pleasant and communicate effectively in a stressful environment.

* Due to the nature of the work this shop produces, the Draper/Cutter will at times be assigned to help with the construction/stitching of projects.
