Newtown, CT

Expires: 06/24/18

Job Dates

June 25-August 12

2500 flat fee

NewArts of Newtown, CT is looking for an Education Director for its 2018 summer season.

NewArts (www.newarts.org) is a non-profit started by a local Newtown parent in response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy of 12/14/12.

To date, NewArts has presented ten large-scale musicals, working with over 500 children onstage, backstage and in the orchestra. Our children work with Broadway-caliber professionals on a daily basis in a nurturing environment that focuses on confidence building, leadership and creativity. We also run a character development program (A.R.C.) in parallel with the performing arts program to give our kids tools for the future.

An award-winning documentary film, "Midsummer in Newtown" was made about our work and is available on Amazon Prime and iTunes. Here is a trailer of the film to give you a sense of the inspiring children we work with: https://youtu.be/fHB7en3EGII

This summers production is Newsies and Christopher Gattelli, who won a Tony Award for his choreography of the Broadway production, will be adapting his choreography for this production. We have around 120 children participating this summer.

The dates are June 25th through August 12th, Monday to Friday, 9AM-4PM - plus performances. August 6-9 would be off.

Once tech rehearsals start, this position would transition into child supervisor.

The education director would be responsible for organizing theatre-based activities for groups of children who are not rehearsing at a given time. Some sessions will be scheduled ahead of time but often there will be a group of children who become available when they are not needed in rehearsal so the education director must have activities at the ready. We generally split the children into two or three groups by age. There will be education interns and parent volunteers to help with multiple age groups.

We are looking for a fun, warm, inspiring, caring theatre educator, director or performer that has experience in theatre games, improvisation with a strong sense of collaboration and keen sense of creativity. This individual must be nurturing, positive, and unflappable.

Candidates must love working with children and inspiring our youth with experiential learning. Youth empowerment is the key component to all of the work that we do at NewArts.

As you can see from the production photos on our website (www.newarts.org), we do A LOT with VERY LITTLE. Ingenuity is the name of the game as we work tirelessly to give these children as many "once-in-a-lifetime" experiences as possible.

Automobile access will be very useful but is not a requirement. Host housing (with private bedroom) will be made available to out of area applicants.

The fee for the entire period starts at $2500 and is based on experience.
