MAPA, Maui Academy of Performing Arts, is seeking a costume designer for our upcoming production of Into the Woods!

Founded in 1974, Maui Academy of Performing Arts (MAPA) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that has grown from a small after-school youth theatre program to one of Hawaiis largest educational performing arts organizations.

The highlight of MAPAs summer season is a large-scale musical performed in Maui Arts + Cultural Center's 1100-seat Castle Theater. This year we are proud to be presenting Into the Woods with a cast of 33 performers (plus the possibility of costumed crew members). Scenic designs are still in the preliminary stages, but this production will be more unique in its visual imagery than many previous remounts.

Artistic work on this show is very collaborative in nature. We are looking for artistic personality who is inspired by + excited by being part of a team creating uniquely visual story telling of this classic musical.

DATES:
-Start date late June/early July
-Costumes to be completed by August 16th
-Load in August 17th
-Tech August 18-24th
-Opening night/end of contract August 25th
-Performances August 25th-September 2nd.

Pay is negotiable between $3,000 and $5,000 BOE and complexity of design.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
-College degree or equivalent experience and a minimum of five years experience designing professionally
-Excellent design skills, both in conception and in execution of vision
-Superior sewing skills, both hand and machine
-Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
-Schedule and work with community volunteers
-Train run crew for quick change, laundry, and repair requirements
-Provide rehearsal pieces as necessary
-Attend all production meetings and keep detailed progress reports
-Keep an accurate track of all expenses, to be submitted to the Production Manager weekly
-Stay within budget and use unique cost solutions as necessary
-Be sensitive to any safety/scenic/movement requirements with the help of the Stage Manager
-A positive attitude, strong work ethic, patience, and a good sense of humor are REQUIRED!
-This position will report directly to the Executive + Artistic Director


MAPA is happy to accept applications from off-island designers. However, travel and housing are not included.
