The University of Iowa Department of Theatre Arts seeks a full time Lecturer/Associate Professor of
Instruction to serve as head of its MFA program in Stage Management and teach courses in it and
other disciplines. Responsibilities include teaching six courses each year which represents 60% of
total effort. Two or three courses will be in stage management. The remaining courses will depend
on background and skills, and will be in arts management, event management, production management,
technical production, and/or design. As head of the graduate stage management program this faculty
member will provide leadership by developing curriculum, recruiting, advising, maintaining contacts
for graduates with professional venues, and supervising student stage managers. This faculty member
will occasionally serve as stage manager on department productions. Participation in the Performing
Arts Entrepreneurship program is also expected, as is professional development and/or professional
stage managing.
The remaining 40% effort will be split between leadership/service activities and professional
development. Required qualifications: MFA (or equivalent training and experience) in stage
management in hand by the start date; professional experience as a stage manager; a minimum of two
years university level teaching beyond the TA level in courses that include stage management and at
least one of these disciplines: arts management, event management, production management, technical
production, and design. Desirable qualifications include experience in arts management, AEA
membership, and evidence of professional work in the areas of opera and/or dance.
