Interviewing now!

I am an established set and prop designer looking for an intern (or two!) for props and set dressing for off broadway shows as well as some film, corporate and photo shoot set dressing/prop work, holiday decorating, events etc. from mid may or early June through the summer, end date flexible but minimum of three months.

This internship is unpaid. Some/many meals will be provided to equal hundreds of dollars over the course of the internship dependent on number of hours worked and especially during longer work hours as well as taxi transportation when necessary. School credit is available for internship, and you must have your own unlimited metro card and transportation. Hours can range from 5-35 hours per week depending on the project and intern's schedule, but intern should have at least 3 days per week available, and ideally at least two are weekdays. There is typically at least one opportunity for paid work during the internship if intern is available, and ideally many future opportunities following successful completion of internship and interest in a career in set and prop design or art department, and especially interest to experience the freelance life in the industry. There will also be opportunity for guaranteed IMDB credit this summer.

Ideally you are a student or recent grad in set or prop design for theatre or film, or an artist specifically interested in the field. Your schedule is fairly flexible, even last minute, class or work schedules okay if fairly consistent. You MUST be currently located in the Greater New York City area with your own transportation to Manhattan.

You will gain valuable knowledge of working as a freelancer in NYC theatre and get to know the city from a props perspective, as well as possible opportunity to work in some corporate and photo/film work, and receive top notch one on one mentoring and arts career guidance with portfolio and resume if desired. With successful completion of the internship you will walk away with a fantastic future job reference who has many connections in various fields and the possibility to extend into a longer term internship or move into a paid assistant role with a variety of projects in many design areas. The intern will follow a curriculum where he/she will be able to also work on separate portfolio building projects with mentorship.

Some or all of the following experience/skills are very helpful but not crucial, as many of these things you will learn in the internship, and no experience is necessary, just willingness and eagerness to learn. Please mention in your reply which of the below you are most interested in learning more about, and which you have most experience with, if any.

-Photoshop, other creative suite a plus
-shopping for prop items around NYC and online
-love for organization (you will help with a small prop stock in Harlem)
-mural/scenic painting/faux techniques
-period history knowledge
-work with fabric draping, sewing a plus
-carpentry experience
-Electrical wiring experience
-Photo shoot/film experience
-Mac proficiency, own laptop
-Knowledge of Microsoft office, iWork, and Google docs
-Budget management
-Administrative, organizational, and computer skills
-You are hopefully the type of person others instantly can connect with. This doesn't mean you necessarily must be outgoing, but those who meet you get a positive impression even if very briefly.

-be positive and professional, trustworthy
-be willing to try new things and enthusiastic/interested in doing so. Props is all about learning something new, and eager and curious people will thrive!
-love organization and prop shopping/research
-have a strong work ethic
-committed, not easy to give up, good problem solving skills a plus, but you will learn to improve these!
-live in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx or Queens. Manhattan is preferred merely for your commute time.
-Have at least 3 days of business hour availability per week starting first week of June (ideally at least two of those days are weekdays), and flexibility for more during busier times. Recommended only 3 days of other consistent work/school so that you have one day per week completely off for best performance and focus in the internship. The more time you are able to put into the internship the more you will gain!

Please email with your resume and also portfolio/work samples (if you have any) as well as a short introduction about yourself and why you would be a good fit for this internship and your career goals. Looking for someone available to interview early May for a start date mid May or beginning of June, but flexible. Please also send any conflicting dates during the summer (dates away, class/work times, etc).
