Purpose of Job: The individual in this position is responsible for general oversight and supervision of all work related to theatrical productions and general operations. This position reports directly to the Technical Supervisor and coordinates all work with the Technical Supervisor. This individual will be the departmental expert for entertainment lighting and electrical systems in all on-campus performance venues. The individual in this position works closely with the faculty, students and staff of the UNC School of the Arts.

The Assistant Technical Director - Lighting supervises all UNCSA productions and outside productions as it pertains to related building and state laws and regulations, health, safety and fire codes. These standards include, but are not limited to, the National Electrical Code standards, National Fire Protection Act standards, OSHA and ESTA standards. This individual also tracks and manages multiple events and facility projects involving the work of users, vendors, laborers and/or other services.

The Assistant Technical Director - Lighting will instruct and train students and other individuals in the proper use, care and maintenance of specialized stage equipment and other specialized performance facilities systems with a special emphasis on safety procedures.

The Assistant Technical Director Lighting will design, coordinate and prepare specifications, paste-ups, layouts, requisitions and bid invitations, and serve as project manager for the entertainment lighting and electrical systems portion of any performance facility capital improvement project.
The Assistant Technical Director - Lighting will assist with the maintenance and storage of theatrical rigging, theatrical lighting control systems and fixtures, power distribution systems, and other specialized technical production equipment.

The Assistant Technical Director - Lighting procures and operates specialized technical production equipment (portable lighting systems, cameras, projector systems, etc.).

Competencies: Knowledge, skills, abilities and attributes required in this position? What educational background is needed to perform these duties and responsibilities? What kind or work experience is needed?

Preferred skills include, but are not limited to, a general knowledge of concert/theatrical rigging, lighting and sound systems. Should have a working knowledge of entertainment building operations. Should have experience with the Hippotizer and/or the Pandoras Box media servers and projection systems. Should be able to program and operate various theatrical lighting control consoles including, but not limited to, the ETC line of consoles, the MA Lighting grandMA and the High End Systems Wholehog. Should have a working knowledge of entertainment power distribution systems including low voltage control systems. Should have the ability to configure and implement an entertainment network system in both hardware and software. Should have a working knowledge of NFPA-70 and NFPA-70E electrical codes. Should be able to trouble shoot and repair electronics. Should have a working knowledge of both PC + MAC hardware platforms and operating systems. Should have experience using LightWright, AutoCAD and/or VectorWorks, and all Microsoft Office software with an emphasis on PowerPoint. Should have a working knowledge of IATSE work rules and contracts. This position requires the ability to work on and plan multiple projects while continuing to complete all regular tasks.

The individual in this position must be capable of working comfortably at heights that exceed twenty (20) feet.

The individual in this position must have a full range of color vision because of various safety factors.

Heavy physical effort will be required occasionally. The individual in this position must be able to:
Lift and carry 40 to 60 pounds frequently and up to 80+ pounds occasionally.
Climb stairs, ladders, ramps, etc.
Kneel, crouch, bend at waist, crawl, turn/twist, and work in cramped working quarters.
Work in extreme temperatures and high noise levels.
Have the manual dexterity required to operate tools and theatrical equipment.
Capable of frequently pulling and pushing 50+ pounds.
A physical size within the working limitations of the ladders, scaffolding and man lifts used by the Department of Campus Performance Facilities.

This position requires that the safety of others be of highest priority in performing duties. This includes ensuring the safety of not only other staff members, but students, faculty, and the general public. The consequences of error in this position are serious ranging from performances being affected to poor public relations to potential injury or worse due to safety concerns. The individual in this position must at all time use good judgment when performing the duties associated with the position with no room for error. Precision and accuracy when operating all equipment at specified engineering standards is critical. The individual in this position works independently with minimal supervision.

The individual in this position works closely with the faculty, staff, and students of all departments of the university and will also be working closely with non-university personnel who are involved with on-campus special events. This individual needs the ability to handle minor confrontations and disagreements with tact, courtesy, and some persuasive ability.

A four-year degree in theatre technology or a related field is preferred. A minimum of two years supervisory experience in the operation and maintenance of a university performance venue is required in conjunction with formal education.
