The Technical Director has a combination of experience in stage production - lighting, set building, and sound as well as teaching. The position is responsible for teaching Technical Theater classes and other performing arts institute courses. With little supervision, the Technical Director will build sets, design lights and sound for the fall play, spring musical, and other school performances.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Tech Teacher:

Teach sound, lighting, and set design.
Teach students to run light/sound boards for shows.
Keep online gradebook up to date with daily entries for attendance, grades, etc.
Turn in daily lesson plans and monthly unit plans.
Other teaching responsibilities as required
Technical Director:

Design and build sets, design lights, and sound for shows and concerts.
Supervise students as they run tech for shows
Manage pre-production, production, and post-production details, coordinating all aspects of production activity; develop and meet production timelines, ensure effective communication throughout the production cycle, and hold production meetings.
Coordinate and supervise tech crew, load in, and post-production strikes.
Program Manager:

Assist in the development and implementation of other Appell Center education projects
Must be detail oriented and highly organized with an ability to multi-task
Ability to meet deadlines in a timely manner

Maintain effective communication with the school and Appell Center

Knowledge of structural engineering as it applies to theatrical construction and knowledge of and ability to execute theatrical rigging in a safe and functional manner.

Create a safe environment for the students to learn.
Education and Experience

BA degree plus at least 3 years in progressively responsible and relevant experience required.

Experience in the following areas is considered essential: Education and Technical Theatre.

Pennsylvania Department of Education Certification strongly preferred: English/Communications

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, climb or balance. The employee is often required to sit and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and will occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

Excellent hearing is essential.

Work Environment

Travel between William Penn High School and Appell Center may be required.

Some work outside of regular hours is required due to production schedules, lesson planning and program implementation. Some unavoidable exposure to dirt or dust, paints and other chemicals, and equipment, some of which may be hazardous.
