The Smithsonian Folklife Festival, founded in 1967, is an international exposition of living cultural heritage annually produced outdoors on the National Mall, taking place for two weeks every summer drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors.

It is an educational presentation, usually divided into 2-3 unique programs, that features musicians, artists, performers, craftspeople, workers, cooks, storytellers, and others from states, regions, and nations around the world.

For the 2020 Festival the theme will be Traditional Knowledge and the Environment, we will create custom-built structures, stages, scenery, and other infrastructural projects in our 17,000 square foot shop to be installed on the National Mall in support of four programs that feature Brazil, UAE, Solar Decathlon, and SI Conservation Commons, all of which will feature living cultural traditions, crafts, food, fashion, music, performance, demonstrations, dance, and storytelling.

The Festival is a complex technical production, requiring a high level of coordination, communication, and expertise from all temporary staff.

Electrician duties include, but are not limited to the following:
- Coordinate with Technical Director and Operations Manager to assess, plan, and execute Festival electrical systems.
- Understand electrical loads and generator sizing.
- Design temporary electrical distribution plan
- Safely plan, carry out and oversee install + removal, and maintain single and poly-phase power distribution systems for Festival stages, concessions, program tents, office trailers, and other ancillary structures. This includes leading small crews to facilitate install and removal of feeder cable and distro equipment.

- Operate and refuel portable diesel generators and light towers.
- Estimate and monitor fuel needs.
- Inspect, maintain, and repair electrical power distro inventory and assess other electrical needs.
- Other Shop and/on-site build production operations as assigned.

Candidate must have prior electrical power distribution experience in the entertainment or event industry, while having superior knowledge in the following:
- Electrical systems and safety
- Electrical theory, loads, and how to size generators.
- Large scale event experience.
- AutoCad is helpful
- Leadership and Supervisory experience
- Judgement and decision making in high stress, fast paced situations
- Planning, scheduling, logistical, and labor estimation.

Work will take place both in an office and outdoors during all-weather conditions, requiring lifting, walking, standing, and other strenuous physical exertion.
