Position Summary:

Master Electrician reports to the Technical Director and performs electrical and technical stage production duties and assists rental users and their technical staff.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

The Master Electrician supervises on-call stage technicians. Responsibilities include training employees; assigning and directing employee work; and appraising employee performance. The Master Electrician carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Glendale Arts policies and procedures and applicable federal and California state laws.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

1. Assists the Technical Director and Assistant Technical Director in advancing the lighting needs of renters and scheduling electricians, spot-ops, and stand-in Master Electricians.

2.Interprets designers plot, lead crew hanging, circuiting and focusing of stage lighting equipment; arrange rental orders.

3. Serves primarily as the Master Electrician role during productions handling all power and lighting needs throughout the whole venue. May also serve as the Technical Supervisor on film shoots or the Stage Supervisor in the absence of the Technical Director and the Assistant Technical Director.

4. Maintains organized and functional inventory of stage lighting fixtures, accessories, cables and color filters, gobos, etc.

5. Maintains all paperwork related to lighting and maintains / updates the Lighting operating playbook

6. Prepares and maintains the Alex Theatre Rep Plot, recommend changes when necessary and lead all restoring of the house plot after events.

7. Conducts maintenance, repair and adjustment of all stage lighting instruments and related equipment in accordance with existing safety regulations.

8. Prepares and manages operating budget for lighting.

9. Participate in strategic planning related to capital lighting advancements.

10. Facilitate lighting design or create basic lighting design for events.

11. Performs other related duties as required.

Job Requirements and Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

1. A Bachelors degree from an accredited college or educational institution preferably in technical theatre arts or a related discipline, or may substitute work experience for education.

2. Two to three years of demonstrated success as a lead or Master Electrician for a live performance theater or comparable performing arts organization.

Knowledge and Skills:

1. Strong knowledge of computerized lighting systems including programming of conventional and moving lights

2. Strong knowledge of power distribution systems.

3. Experience in Lighting Design is preferred, but not required.

4. Experience with Ion lighting console required. Experience with Hog or Grand MA preferred, but not required.

5. Thorough knowledge of lighting software.

6. Experience with Vectorworks.

7. Practical skills and experience in modern professional theater techniques.

8. Must be able to problem solve and handle varied projects simultaneously under tight deadlines.

9. A team player who is able to work well with others under sometimes stressful environments.

10. The ability to work and communicate effectively with people of diverse cultural backgrounds in a backstage environment.

11. Excellent English language oral and written communication skills.

12. Second language skills in Spanish or Armenian preferred.

13. Computer proficiency required and familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook is preferred, but not required.

14. Excellent customer service skills.

15. Detail oriented.


Other:

1. Possession of a valid California motor vehicle operator's license and proof of automobile insurance coverage.

2. Must have the ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and some holidays.

The Master Electrician is a physically demanding position. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit, stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel or crouch. The employee will occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, and depth perception. The employee will regularly use a clear-com headset and two-way radio handset.

The Master Electrician may be subject to some atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odor, dust, chemical smoke, etc. The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but is occasionally loud.
