PCPA, a professional theatre company on Californias Central Coast for over 50 years, is accepting applications for the 2017 summer season. Positions available are:

ATD/Carpenter
Lead Carpenters
Carpenters
Run Crew/Carpentry

2017 summer season: BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, LEND ME A TENOR THE MUSICAL, NEWSIES THE MUSICAL, TWELFTH NIGHT, AND FENCES.

We are currently looking to fill 8 scene shop internships for the summer, with 2 of those positions lasting for the full year. We also have 6 summer positions that will be split between work in the scene shop and run-crew. These internships are covered by a scholarship and include one college credit.
The scene shop positions are as follows:

Associate Technical Director; Two positions. Responsibilities will vary depending upon the abilities and experience of the intern. The purpose of this position is to give practical experience to interns who are on track for work as a Technical Director by allowing them to function as an Assistant Technical Director for one show. Responsibilities will be to build scenery during the regular work day and draft working drawings for the show on evenings and weekends. Meetings will be held during the work day for the purpose of corrections and final drafting. With the approval of the Technical Director the drawings will be sent to the shop floor for construction. The Associate Technical Director will work under the staff Shop Foreman at this point, and possibly build the more complicated pieces of scenery from his or her drafting. Once a contract is signed, and if the Associate Technical Director is willing, a show may be sent to them prior to their arrival with notes about the construction and the show space. This will allow for drafting prior to arrival in Santa Maria. This will be helpful as PCPA has a busy summer season with multiple shows on the shop floor at any given time.

Carpenter; six positions. Carpenters must be proficient with shop tools and have a good working knowledge of theatrical scenery. Carpenters must also take direction well, work as part of a team, be able to lift 50lbs, and be able to read shop drawings.

Run Crew/Shop Carpenter; Six positions. Run Crew back stage responsibilities will vary on a show by show basis, as dictated by stage management. In addition to running the show, interns will also prepare the show space, which will include mopping floors and moving large tarps. In the scene shop interns will need basic carpentry experience, be able to lift 50 lbs. and handle large rolling scenery.
All interns will be responsible for the loading in and striking of shows; there will be no exceptions.

Professional Internship Program
PCPA offers professional internships in multiple areas of theatre. PCPAs master-apprentice approach to training provides unique experience with theatre professionals both resident and guests. As an intern you will be training directly with professionals in their respective fields.

Carpentry
Carpentry Interns work under the supervision of the Technical Director. This internship provides students with the opportunity to work alongside professional scenic carpenters while they develop and hone their skills in all areas of scenic construction. Opportunities may include executing scenic evaluations and shop drawings. Based on skill level and desire, interns may serve as assistant technical director for an appropriately sized production.

Program Requirements
All interns are required to be registered students and must be accepted as a student at Allan Hancock College. Interns in the summer program are offered the opportunity to enroll for as many as 16 units (depending on eligibility). The average summer internship is 13 weeks, from the end of May through the end of August. Some of the internships extend to the end of October.

Scholarships
PCPA offers a number of scholarships to support the intern-student while participating in the program. Currently these scholarships are in the neighborhood of $4100 for the summer term. Intern Scholarship applications can be found on the PCPA Web site. The IRS considers these scholarships taxable income. Interns are encouraged to keep track of all educational expenses in order to reduce tax liability.
Housing
PCPAs Company Manager can assist students in identifying reasonably priced housing options within the community. Rental costs vary greatly depending upon students requirements. A student can expect to pay between $600 and $800 per month for housing costs.
